Kean said he believes in abortion rights, differing with the Republican administration in Washington. When NJ Governor Corzine became Governor, he appointed Democratic U. S. Senator Robert Menendez who was a former Congressman representing the 13th legislative district to fill his U.S. Senate Seat for one year until the term for the Senate Seat expires in November, 2006. Senator Menendez is now running for the seat as the Democratic nominee.
NJ State Senator Thomas Kean, Jr., son of former Governor Tom Kean, is the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate seat.
Robert Menendez has consistently voted pro-abortion, pro-embryonic stem cell research as a Member of Congress. He voted against H.R. 534, the Bill to Ban Human Cloning (Roll call vote #39 on 02/27/03). He also voted yes on H.R. 810, a bill to use federal tax dollars on research that kills living human embryos (Roll call vote # 204 on 05/24/05 and Roll Call Vote # 206, 07/19/06).
